Quartz vs. Marble
One of the most common questions we get is “What is the best material for me?” The answer is always the same: it depends. We’re here to simplify things however. Today we are starting with two popular choices: marble and quartz.
Origin
Marble is mined straight out of the earth and then cut and polished. Each slab goes through very little alteration from its natural state. Quartz is manufactured using ground natural quartz bound with resins and some added colors.
Appearance
Both marble and quartz are beautiful in their own ways but are very different.
Marble has veins and swirls of color in an infinite variety of patterns. No two pieces are the same. Even two slabs cut from the same block can vary wildly in appearance. This will give every project its own distinct look. Quartz will have a more consistent look and in situation that require multiple pieces being fit together the seam is much less noticeable.
Durability
Both are durable and can easily last the life of the home. With that being said, quartz is more resistant to scratching and staining. Marble is porous and spills (specially anything acidic) can leave their mark. Both are also heat resistant but direct contact (like a hot pan) should be avoided to prevent cracks or discoloration. Marble will require sealing and resealing periodically to prevent damage. Quartz doesn’t require a sealant. Quartz is vulnerable to UV rays and must be potected from direct sunlight
The Verdict
Both make a great choice but it all comes down to who will be using them and where. The low maintenance of quartz makes it great for high traffic areas and for people who don’t want to worry about spills or etching. Marble has a look that can’t be beat and does more for the resale value of the home.
