Granite vs Marble

Time for another side by side comparison to help you decide whats the best choice of stone for you next project. Today we are looking at, arguably, the two most timeless choices: marble and granite. Both have been used as a building material for over a millennia and for good reason. They’re both durable and attractive. So which one is right for you? Let’s find out.

Origin

Both are naturally occurring stones and go through a similar mining and transportation process to get from the quarry to your home. They are both found all over the world, with each region supplying it’s own unique colors.

Appearance

The natural process that creates these stones also gives each its telltale look. Granite is formed by pieces of feldspar, quartz, and other minerals are crystallized by cooling magma and pressed together by pressure to form the grainy, chunk looking stone. Marble, on the other hand, begins as limestone and over time heat and pressure will recrystallize the calcite which gives marble it’s veiny swirling patterns.

Durability

Granite is one of the best choices for durability. Rated as 6-7 on the Mohs scale (scratch resistance) it is one of the most durable options for natural stone. Marble (rated as a 3-4) doesn’t have quite the same toughness, but is still stone. Both are porous and require sealing every 1-3 years and can be stained or etched by some liquids.

The Verdict

Granite is definitely the more durable of the two materials but if cared for properly they can both last for decades. Both have their own distinct look and can make a huge difference in the beauty of your home.
